How does Cerazette (desogestrel) work?

Cerazette can stop you getting pregnant in one of two ways:

  1. Cerazette prevents eggs from ripening in the ovaries. This is also how combined oral contraceptives work.
  2. Cerazette thickens the mucus at the entry to your womb (the cervix). This makes it difficult for sperm to penetrate and reach an egg to fertilise it.

For reliable contraception, it is very important that you take Cerazette at approximately the same time each day. Provided that you take any missed pills within 12 hours of your usual time of day, then you can be reassured that Cerazette’s contraceptive effects are maintained (this is known as a 12-hour missed pill window).
