Inhibition of ovulation

Cerazette effectively inhibits ovulation, even when a pill is taken up to 12 hours late.1,2,4 During a 1-year trial of Cerazette versus a traditional progestogen-only pill (POP) containing 30 µg of levonorgestrel, maximum progesterone levels were assessed to measure the effects of the pills on ovulation.2

  • Progesterone levels were < 10 nmol/l, signifying no ovulation, in 97% of Cerazette treatment cycles.2
  • Progesterone levels were > 30 nmol/l, indicating ovulation in only one (3%) of Cerazette treatment cycles in the twelfth treatment cycle, with no ovulations in the seventh treatment cycle.2
  • In comparison, ovulation occurred in 38% and 39% of women in the levonorgestrel group in the seventh and twelfth treatment cycles, respectively, a statistically significant difference when compared with Cerazette.2

Another study found that Cerazette inhibits ovulation even when a pill is taken 12 hours late.4 Just over 100 women took part in the 56-day study and purposely took Cerazette 12 hours late on three scheduled dates. Progesterone levels were measured every 2 days and showed that it took at least 7 days (mean 17.2 days) for ovulations to occur after stopping Cerazette.4

These two studies provide strong evidence of the ability of Cerazette to effectively inhibit ovulation.

Cerazette has a strong inhibitory effect on ovulation2

Cerazette has a strong inhibitory effect on ovulation

Adapted from Ref 2.
* p=0.001 comparing Cerazette values with those seen with the traditional POP. Ovulation is inhibited when maximum progesterone concentrations are below the threshold of 10 nmol/l (which indicates that the luteal phase of the menstrual cycles is absent or inadequate). Progesterone levels >30 nmol/l are indicative of ovulation.
